Why it matters

  • December Henry Hub natural gas futures (NGZ26) traded near $2.95 per million British thermal units late on Wednesday, Nov. 4, up from $2.895 on Tuesday, Yahoo Finance data show.
  • The Henry Hub spot price was $2.63 per MMBtu on Tuesday, Nov. 3, up from $2.42 on Friday, Oct. 30, but below $3.28 on Oct. 19, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

U.S. natural gas prices are below $3. December Henry Hub natural gas futures traded near $2.95 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) late on Wednesday, Nov. 4, up about 2% from Tuesday's $2.895, according to Yahoo Finance data for the NGZ26 contract. The Henry Hub spot price was $2.63 on Tuesday, Nov. 3, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said.

What are natural gas prices today?

The two numbers people quote are the futures price and the spot price at Henry Hub, a pipeline hub in Louisiana. Futures are for gas delivered in a future month. The spot price is for gas traded now for near-term delivery.

Prices are in dollars per MMBtu. Bcf means billion cubic feet. The futures figure is a late-session level at about 21:44 GMT on Nov. 4, not an official settlement.

How has the Henry Hub spot price moved?

It fell in late October and has since steadied. EIA data show the spot price at $3.28 on Monday, Oct. 19, and $3.30 on Thursday, Oct. 15. It dropped to $2.42 by Friday, Oct. 30, then rose to $2.54 on Monday, Nov. 2, and $2.63 on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

What is Henry Hub?

Henry Hub is the delivery point for natural gas futures on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX). The EIA's futures table says prices "are based on delivery at the Henry Hub in Louisiana" and that official daily closing prices are taken at 2:30 p.m. from the NYMEX trading floor. Because so much gas is priced off it, Henry Hub is the main U.S. benchmark, much as Brent and WTI are for crude oil.

How does gas storage affect prices?

Storage is a key supply signal. The EIA says "the volume of natural gas in underground storage fields has a large influence on overall supply." Every week, the EIA's Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report shows how much gas utilities and traders have put into or taken out of storage.

The latest report, released Thursday, Oct. 29, showed working gas of 3,724 Bcf as of Friday, Oct. 23. That was a net increase of 80 Bcf from the week before. Stocks were 147 Bcf below a year earlier and 38 Bcf above the five-year average of 3,686 Bcf, the EIA said. The next report is due Thursday, Nov. 5.

What else moves natural gas prices?

The EIA lists three main supply factors: the amount of gas produced, the volume in storage, and imports and exports. On the demand side, it lists winter and summer weather, economic growth, and the availability and prices of other fuels. Hurricanes and other severe weather can also affect supply, the EIA says.
