Verizon shares fell 3.5% on Monday, Oct. 26, after the wireless carrier's third-quarter revenue came in below Wall Street estimates, even as it added more phone customers and raised its full-year outlook. The stock closed at $43.10, down from Friday's close of $44.66, according to Yahoo Finance daily data.
Verizon said total operating revenue rose 1.5% to $34.3 billion, in results filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday. That was short of the roughly $34.85 billion analysts expected, TipRanks reported. Adjusted earnings per share rose 8.3% to $1.31, above the $1.27 consensus cited by TipRanks.
Why did Verizon stock fall after earnings?
Revenue missed estimates, and that outweighed the good news, according to 24/7 Wall St. and TipRanks. Equipment revenue fell 9.0% to $5.1 billion. Verizon said that was mainly because fewer customers upgraded phones and it spent less on device subsidies.
Shares traded between $42.47 and $43.84 during the session, Yahoo Finance data show. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.3% and the S&P 500 rose 0.7% on the day.
